Master of Lines, Emotions, and Timeless Narratives

Jogen Chowdhury is one of India’s most celebrated contemporary artists, known for his distinctive use of lines and textured cross-hatching. Born in 1939 in present-day Bangladesh, he witnessed the turmoil of Partition, which deeply influenced his art. His paintings often explore human emotions, societal contradictions, and the struggles of everyday life with a bold, expressive style.

Unlike traditional realism, his figures are distorted yet deeply evocative, speaking through their exaggerated forms, melancholic eyes, and fluid lines. His mastery of ink, pastel, and watercolors gives his work a raw intensity, making his characters appear almost alive—vulnerable yet powerful.

Jogen’s art reflects themes of sensuality, decay, and political satire, often drawing from Bengali culture and mythology. His ability to capture the essence of human emotions, whether through a solitary gaze or the twist of a body, makes his work universally relatable.

A recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Jogen Chowdhury's paintings continue to challenge, inspire, and provoke thought. His unique style, blending traditional Indian influences with modern expressionism, ensures that his legacy in Indian art remains unparalleled.
